I had my daughter come to me with an interesting idea for a film; what if when you see raindrops, you would hear different types of music in your head. We brainstormed a bit, like what types of music would correspond with what types of drops, etc. It has not been raining very much in San Antonio this summer, but since it was raining that day, we decided to move on the inspiration, load the video camera and shoot.
Often times I get my own ideas for the film and get bogged down by all the wrong things. Will I have the proper actors, is the story strong enough, when will I have time, where will I shoot, so on and so forth. There are countless things that afford wonderful excuses to not actual doing the film. What was different this time is that I did not want my daughter to do fall into those bad habits. If you have a burning desire, stoke the coals and set the wheels in motion. Luck and good fortune favor those who pursue luck and good fortune.
So we shot some film, my daughter and I made our way around the apartment complex and we got some decent shots. No Oscar's forthcoming, but we had fun. I'll spend the rest of this weekend editing our humble first collaborative work. But more importantly, I will think back on the lesson that I tried to teach my daughter. The principle is sound even if the teacher forgets to apply it now and again.

All too true. Two points I'd like to make.
1. The epiphany you just experienced is nothing short of what writers experience also. While not a novelist, I do get creative bursts of energy where I feel I must capture all of my thoughts, and I just write. Sometimes none of it makes sense, but it's all ideas and future musings. That's okay, because when I come back to it, I can start to mold and shape, but take the experience for the moment it is and go with it.
2. Experiences like yours are priceless. I look forward to the day when my two kids are older and we can embark on creative projects like this. My wife is a painter, dancer, musician, and I am a writer, designer, and public speaker, so there is so much opportunity for us to connect with them creatively.
Be proud papa bear, you learn as you go, and the experiences, be they good or bad is what shapes us to be the person we are, thus imparting that knowledge to the next generation of creatives.
